True Happiness
Most people want to feel happy. But I think it’s important to recognize—and even appreciate—how ephemeral happiness is. It’s not in our best interest to get fixated on always being and feeling happy. Striving for constant happiness is impossible. It’s a game you’ll never win. It’s addiction.
Happiness is not a destination; it’s not even an emotion. In fact, happiness requires effort, it involves unhappiness, and it is largely unattainable. True happiness is the byproduct of pursuits less appreciated. True happiness is a direction that can guide you through life. True happiness requires the contrast of struggle and hard work. Without one, could we really appreciate the other? If you don’t suffer for something, even a little, it’s unlikely to satisfy you much. One of the great paradoxes of happiness is that what brings joy is not attaining a desired goal but making progress toward it.
