Time For Letting Go
“To live in this world
you must be able
to do three things:
to love what is mortal;
to hold it
against your own bones knowing
your own life depends on it;
and, when the time comes to
let it go,
to let it go.”
—Mary Oliver
I can get nostalgic. I look back and miss friendships that no longer exist; cities I no longer live in; jobs I no longer work at; things I no longer have.
It can be easy to think “I had it so good back then.” But just because you had something good doesn’t mean you should go back to it.
We need to recognize when something is not aligned with where we currently are in life; when something is not suited to the growth we are trying to pursue; or when something is simply not possible anymore. We can honor it without holding on to it. Struggling to release your past stems from a belief that it can give you a feeling you believe you don’t already have within yourself.
It’s okay to mourn the loss of your past—it’s the same past (and the same friends and cities and jobs) that got you this far, but it’s no longer equipped to carry you forward.
You had it, you held it, now it’s time to let it go.
